304 stainless steel casting vs 45 # steel casting: full analysis of cost and material selection
In the field of investment casting, 304 stainless steel and 45 # steel (medium carbon steel) are the two most widely used materials. Many customers often ask when inquiring, "Why is the price of 304 so much higher than that of 45 # steel
As a professional foundry, Gulinda will deeply analyze the cost difference between the two from three dimensions: raw materials, processing difficulty, and post-processing.
    1. Raw Material Cost
This is the most obvious part of the price difference between the two:
304 stainless steel: contains approximately 18% chromium (Cr) and 8% nickel (Ni). Nickel metal is expensive and fluctuates greatly. Normally, the unit price of 304 stainless steel is 3-4 times that of 45 # steel.
45 # steel: It belongs to high-quality carbon structural steel, does not contain expensive alloy elements, has abundant resources, and is very affordable in price.
    2. Casting Process Cost
Although both can use the Lost Wax Casting method, there are differences in operational details:
Melting temperature: The melting point of 45 # steel is around 1500 ° C, while that of 304 stainless steel is around 1400-1450 ° C. Although 304 has a slightly lower melting point, its flowability at high temperatures is poor, requiring higher design requirements for the pouring system.
Shrinkage rate of mold shell: The shrinkage rate of stainless steel is greater than that of carbon steel. During the mold development stage, 304 stainless steel molds require more accurate compensation calculations, otherwise they are prone to shrinkage or cracking.
    3. Machining Cost
This is a hidden cost that many customers tend to overlook:
45 # steel: excellent cutting performance. It has moderate hardness, is not easy to stick to the tool during processing, has minimal tool wear, and has high processing efficiency.
304 stainless steel: has significant work hardening properties. During the cutting process, the material will quickly harden, resulting in extremely fast tool wear. The labor cost for processing 304 stainless steel is usually 30% -50% higher than that of 45 # steel.
    4. Surface Treatment Cost
This is where stainless steel "turns back a city":
45 # steel: extremely prone to rusting. In order to meet the anti-corrosion requirements, post treatment must be carried out, such as electroplating (zinc, nickel, chromium), blackening, spraying or anodizing (if it is aluminum alloy). These processes have added additional logistics and processing costs.
304 stainless steel: comes with anti-corrosion genes. Usually, only acid pickling and passivation are needed to achieve excellent rust prevention effect, or bright surfaces can be obtained through electrolytic polishing, saving complex coating costs.

    Selection suggestions from Gulinda experts
When choosing 45 # steel: If your components are used in dry indoor environments with high stress but low requirements for appearance (such as internal structural components, gears, and bases), 45 # steel is the most cost-effective choice.
The situation of choosing 304 stainless steel: If the product is used for outdoor, humid environments, food and medical equipment, or if customers require long-term aesthetics, although 304 stainless steel has a higher initial investment, it saves expensive maintenance and replacement costs in the later stage, and is more cost-effective in the long run.
